Aromatherapy Treatments - Do They Really Work?

Aromatherapy treatments have emerged as a popular alternative method to deal with certain ailments. Nowadays, more and more people are looking for alternatives to the conventional forms of medications which often involve taking drugs which cause numerous side effects. Other people may suffer from conditions such as headaches but want to try other methods of treatment.

While aromatherapy treatments have become more popular than ever today, many people are still skeptical about its value. After all, there are so many quack remedies on the market, perhaps this is just another one. And can one really get rid of depression or a cold simply by smelling a few oils?

Ancient Remedies

The truth is that aromatherapy treatments are not some new-fangled concept that was born yesterday. The use of aromatherapy in healing the mind and body has been around for centuries and has been used in civilizations all around the world. In fact, many people believe they are better than conventional treatments in many ways, especially since it involves no chemicals or drugs.

The basic premise of inhaling essential oils for relief is partially true. The oils used in aromatherapy are naturally distilled from plants and a number of special herbs. After proper dilution, these extracts and oils work in two ways to heal a person. The oils stimulate centers in the brain, thus relaxing and healing the body as a whole. The oils also have a number of medicinal properties which are beneficial if absorbed through the skin or inhaled.

What Can Be Treated?

Some people believe that aromatherapy treatments can only be used for relaxing or taking the edge off of a headache. But the truth is that aromatherapy can be used to treat a wide variety of ailments too. The reason behind this is that aromatherapy is essentially a holistic treatment, meaning that it does not isolate a condition and deal with it separately. Instead, it treats the body as a whole and thus aims to heal all of you, rather than just a part. This is in keeping with the belief that the human body has the ability to heal itself if treated properly.

Aromatherapy treatments are effective in dealing with conditions like depression and moodiness, as the right oils can stimulate the brain to relax and become focused on positive things. A number of skin disorders like eczema, acne and dermatitis can be tackled using aromatherapy. Those who are prone to attacks of hysteria and panic can also find soothing comfort in aromatherapy. Muscle aches and physical ailments brought about by stress or tension can also be easily relieved using these kinds of treatments. For people who suffer from constipation, aromatherapy has been known to bring relief and help with digestion issues.

It is important to remember that these essential oils are extremely potent and using them in an undiluted state can lead to breathing problems and skin irritations. Some oils are photo-toxic and may cause a burning sensation on the skin. Perhaps most crucial of all, conventional medication often does not agree with aromatherapy. Those who are undergoing treatment should always consult with their doctor before starting aromatherapy treatments. Also some oils have been known to trigger allergic reactions so ensure that you aren't allergic to any of the plant extracts or herbs that are used. For those people that want an alternative form of therapy which is effective and involves no harsh chemicals or side effects, aromatherapy treatments are a good option.
